Portrait photography: the nice price11.25.11

~

Back in the 1970s and ’80s, Columbia Records had a series of albums labeled “The Nice Price.” They were albums by artists such as Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen that were just a few years old but sold for several dollars less than newer, full-price LPs – we’re talking vinyl records here. I got a number of favorite albums under The Nice Price like Joel’s The Stranger and Springsteen’s The River.

A couple recent chats with friends and clients prompted me to introduce one more, lower-price level on my menu, which I am naming in honor of my favorite LP marketing series. Full-out portrait sessions with several locations and clothing changes are great. But sometimes you’re simply looking for a few shots for, say, a Christmas card or a gift, or just to mark this moment in time. With RCPe’s Nice Price of $49.99 – had to do the .99 for the retail vibe – you get 30 minutes of shooting time with me and your photos delivered in an online SmugMug gallery from which you can order prints or digital files. You still get the personal attention and on-location setting I strive for. We’re just going to shoot it quicker and give you some photos that, like a great Columbia Records’ classic, should give you years of enjoyment and memories.

Event photography: Campfire and Starlight Gala 201111.24.11

~

For the second straight year supporters of Camp Burnamwood in Irvine, Ky., got together in Lexington the Saturday night before Thanksgiving to party and support the Presbyterian camp in Central and Eastern Kentucky. This was a big example to me of what Burnamwood means to students: I was just working with a senior picture client to come up with a location for his shoot in the spring, and when Burnamwood was mentioned, he said that would be perfect.

There were some distinctly Burnamwood touches to the Campfire and Starlight Gala, including Chef Dave Carpenter’s deluxe s’more station and a group sing of Don’t Stop Belivin’ at the end of the night, led by the Tim Talbert Project.

Thanks to the winning bidder on a one-hour photo session with Rich Copley Photo in the silent auction. You were very generous supporting a great cause, and we’ll have a great shoot.

He rocked the bow tie.

Nate’s dad, like me, digs the bow tie – of course, only if you tie it yourself. No greenie ties. So it was a thrill to see the fashion statement was being passed down to a new generation, not only because it has that edge-of-tradition vibe, but it also looks really classy in a photo.

With Nate, we hit two primary locations: Limestone Street, including the epic mural by the Latitude folks at Third Street Stuff, and Keeneland, such a primo photo destination that Nate and I were jockeying for position on the rail with a number of other Lexington-area photographers on this Sunday afternoon. The other sign that Nate’s folks raised him right (OK, there are a lot of signs of this) was his literacy with ’80s movies. When I said on one of the tunnel shots I was looking for Tom Cruise in Risky Business, he knew exactly what I was talking about. (This may also explain why I have been listening to Talking Heads’ Swamp all week.)

Like teenage Tom, Nate’s future looks pretty bright. Just keep wearing those bow ties.

Portrait: Rev. Kyle Brown11.13.11

~

Sometimes, as a photographer, it helps to really know your subject.

A year ago, I shot a portrait of the Rev. Woody Berry, the head of staff at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, and the main shot was really well received – well enough that it was one of the keys to me deciding to hang my shingle out as a photographer. One of the responses was from associate pastor Kyle Brown who said, “I want one.”

And I thought about it … for quite a while. Now, it’s not that it takes me six months to come up with a portrait idea. In fact, as an on-location photographer, it’s my job to come up with ideas in on the spot. But, delays in getting together gave me time to think about Kyle, an interesting mix of cutting edge and tradition in one human being. I didn’t want to replicate Woody’s shot, but should I put him in the context of church at all? Well, yeah – he is a pastor. But how do we do this without letting the tradition overwhelm the youth?

Then, one Sunday, he wore it, this monkish, hooded pastoral robe, and it was all I could do to keep from shouting, “That’s it!” during the call to worship. I don’t know what the technical term for this garment is, but it strikes me as something like a pastoral equivalent of vintage clothing.

But where should we shoot it? Looking at some groomsmen pics from Amy and Dave’s wedding this summer, I noted the pillars at the front of the church and thought the right angle could give Kyle an airy, light background. He completed the look going with the sandals, and we shot it in the waning days of fall. After the original idea, we took a few other looks to give Kyle some variety, and take advantage of the fall color around the church. He used one as his Facebook profile pic and a friend of his commented, “hey, your stole matches the leaves.”

Good thing we waited.

Chevy Suburbans may not be cool in and of themselves. But when one is 20-plus years old with 250,000-plus miles on it, and it’s been kept alive through the care of a dad and his two sons, it gets pretty darned cool. Being red doesn’t hurt, though this senior’s favorite color is orange.

The Suburban was one element of our senior photo shoot with Zach in rural Lexington, along with ultimate Frisbee, a snazzy suit, fall color, and some friendly horses.
